I not-so-recently read a great Twitter thread about why reading and/or writing romance make you a better writer. And I recently read a great romance series called Motion (Laws of Physics #1) and Space (#2) by Penny Reid, that I felt compelled to share this great book and why I enjoyed reading them so much.
I feel like as a genre, a lot of people tend to underestimate romance novels. They seem unnecessarily fluffy, some of them are written badly, the characters are two-dimensional, and there are way too many unromantic sex scenes. But I also feel like a lot of people underestimate romance as a genre is because romance books are hard to write. If you’ve read the Twitter thread written by Tess Sharpe, you’ll understand but romance novels are all about great characterization and timing everything perfectly so that it feels natural.
Recently, I’ve gotten tired of boy-finds-girl-attractive-and-wants-to-have-sex-all-the time books. Mostly because even though they’re romance books, they feel so unromantic (at least it feels that way to me LOL). Motion and Space are both of my first Penny Reid books but they wereso so cute.
The cavern opened and stretched in front of me. I stared at her and I was afraid, because I knew.
My whole life, from this point forward, I would be a fool for Mona DaVinci.
I felt drawn to Mona because I felt like everyone deserves to be happy–especially Mona. A lot of the books centered around romance seem to be about this overly-confident girl and I liked that even though there were so many reasons as to why Mona should feel confident–she seemed to struggle a lot with self-value. That’s relatable.
And you might not realize it but there’s something special about you that makes you unique as a person.
I hoped, if you love someone enough, it was possible to show them what they deserved, and be their source of happiness.
Even if you think you don’t deserve it or you haven’t worked hard enough for it–everyone deserves happiness, whether that be through another person or just by loving yourself.
Overall, Motion and Space were great books and if you enjoy reading romance–I highly recommend!
I’m an introvert and I like reading a lot. I have a degree in library and information science and am currently job hunting. I like taking film photos with my Olympus Om-1 and love 뉴이스트 ♡
